Welcome to Royal Oak Sandlot League

The Royal Oak Sandlot League, established in 1959, is a non-profit local baseball and softball organization that is committed to providing boys and girls from ages 4-18 the opportunity to play in a fun and structured  environment.

Looking for Travel Baseball? Want to still play multiple sports?

    • What is the Stars Program? - It is an opportunity for selected players to be introduced to tournament play and additional training. Tryouts will take place over the August 9/10th weekend and incorporate year-round programming from team building exercises, training, fundraising and spring/summer tournaments.
      • The focus is on players who may be multi-sport athletes or engaged with other activities who are looking for growth and development on the diamond.  Players get the benefit of training, tournament competition and community league play.
      • Travel Baseball is growing and very popular.  The Stars program is designed to provide this for families who want their child to play at an elevated level while balancing other activities and summer schedules.
    • Ages? – We hope to field teams from 8U-15U.  Not each age group may have a team (ex: historically there has not been a specific team for those born between 5/1/12 - 4/30/13 and as a result, those players may choose to play with an older aged team) but we will field teams we can from the number of players trying out and available coaches.  Your child will tryout for the age group / division of your child's age as of 5/1/26.
    • Do all kids make the team? – Unfortunately, no.  With limited coaches, there is a tryout and teams typically take 11-13 players.  Players will show an ability to play at an elevated level, have a positive attitude, willingness to develop and being a great teammate.
    • Schedule? – While each team is different, typically a Stars program begins in early January with winter training, outdoor work in April, scrimmages/games with other community teams in the spring and compete in 4-5 tournaments throughout the summer.
    • Costs? – While the final expense is still being worked out (fees cover the cost of uniforms, tournaments, winter training and more), the cost is on average 50-80% less than most travel organizations.  We believe cost should not be a barrier to getting on the field at any level.
    • Who’s Eligible? – All players in the Sandlot League and partner communities.  Players are expected to play for their recreational team as well as the Stars team.  IF YOU DID NOT PLAY SANDLOT THIS SEASON, YOU CAN STILL TRYOUT AND REGISTER FOR 2026.

    • Coach - Practice Plan
      • Thanks to all the coaches for coming out to the Coaching Meeting.  Below is a simple practice plan to help you get started on the season!
    15 Min: Warmup
    •Team Stretching/ Throwing (Throwing progression)
•Wrist flips, quicksand throwing, step and throw, shuffle and throw

    45 MIN: Defense Drills
    •Partner shuffle drill (3 rounds: 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 minute)
•Field and funnel: Each partner is down on their knees with a focus of fielding the ball out in front and gathering the ball to their belly button
•Short hops: While partners are on their knees, they will focus on pushing their glove hand palm through the ball
•IF/OF: Players take their positions and work on groundballs and fly balls and make plays to the appropriate base. This would be the time to discuss cut-offs, double cuts, bunt coverage, etc.

    45 MIN: Hitting Drills
•Tee work: 5 steps to setup- even feet, athletic balance, knob to the catcher, load and step, and drive hips thru the swing
•Soft toss: Underhand flips to hitters. Focus on inside/outside pitches, and the 5 steps. Load will be most important as a ball is now moving.
•Overhand pitches: Put hitters in live at bat situations. 0-0 count, 2 strike approach, hitting with runners on.

    15 MIN: Wrap Up/ Conditioning
•Team discussion/ quiz of what we worked on
    •Understanding approach at the plate
•Team relay race. Split team into 2 groups and do sprint relays.
    •Planks, wall seats, push ups
